Historical Overview of the New York Morgan Stallion Service Auction…

The first New York Morgan Stallion Service Auction was held in 1989. The original committee put a group of 29 stallions whos services were offered at that event. After holding the auction at a American Legion post in Little Falls, NY through the ‘97 Auction, the committee made the move to the Holiday Inn in Syracuse where the event was held through 2003. The current committee voted to upgrade the look of the Auction and move to the Prime Hotel in Saratoga Springs, NY.

From a first payout of $5000 in 1989 for the two NY SSA Sweepstakes Classes, to the payout of over $28,000 in the three Sweepstakes Classes at the ’06 New York State Morgan Horse Show. In total, the proceeds collected from the 1989 auction through the 2006 event are in excess of $347,000! To date - actual payouts of over $230,000 have gone to the Sweepstakes ribbon winners. The highest total for the history of the Auction to date is just under $52,200 in year 2006.

Originally the SSA Sweepstakes numbered two. They were 4 year old classes for Park and English Pleasure. In and effort to give some of the Auction money a quicker payback, the Committee added a Weanling Class at the 1996 NYSMHS for the foals sired by the ’95 NY SSA services sold, in addition to the two 4 yr. Old performance classes held in 1999.

In an effort to better address the current show ring demands, the SSA Committee changed the two 4 year old Performance Class specs starting at the 2003 NYSMHS. Now, in addition to the Weanling Class, the classes offered for Sweepstakes eligible horses are for the Park/English Pleasure/Classic Pleasure horses combined AND the Hunter/Western/Sport combined.
